Amazing Woman

So last night I decided to ditch chorale and go to enrichment. The guest speaker is a holocaust survivor. She first started out by telling us how her parents and grandparents were taken to Duckow. Once there they were separated into to groups of men, women, and children. She never saw her family again when she was taken. She was only three years old when this happened. She was there for five years. She told how she learned early on not to cry. She said that every morning they would get up and go to the trough to clean up and a little boy right beside her started to cry and the guard shot him in the side of the head. So not only did they have to wash off the dirt they had to wash off the blood of the little boy. This is the water that they also had to drink from. They would get hot water at noon with a piece of very hard dark bread. They would take it back to there baracks and soak the bread and when it was soft they would take it and put it in the cracks of the walls so they would have something to eat later on. They were sexually abused twice a week. By the time that she left she was 8 years old and weighed 25 pounds. She then lived in a convent because the nuns there took them in. There were 146 (I think that is the number she said) children that survived and today she is the very last of them. They either took their lives or died of other things. Since then she was diagnosed with colon, breast, stomach and most recently lung cancer. She married an american pilot in 1960 and lost him as a POA in Vietnam in 1964 Christmas eve. She raised her son by herself and never got remarried. In 1993-1994 her son died when his, "plane fell down." If all that wasn't enough she was also on the plane that was hijacked on 9/11. How much this woman has been through. Holy cow. She is 69 years old and when she feels up to it she runs 15 miles a night. This woman is truly amazing. She still has spunk. That is a good thing.
